Rise of the e-machines!

E-bike incentives get employees out of their cars (The Netherlands)

In April, the City Region of Arnhem-Nijmegen subsidised the purchase of 650 e-bikes. Those who bought an e-bike now travel 62% less car kilometres.

From April 2012, employees in Arnhem-Nijmegen received a 30% discount on the purchase of an e-bike, up to €600. The offer was only valid for employees of companies who joined the “Offensief Bereikbaarheid”, a cooperative of local governments and employers. The e-bike initiative convinced another 10 companies to join the cooperative, bringing the total number of members to 120.

More than half of the participating employees said they would not have bought an e-bike if it were not for the incentive. Before the start of the subsidy, 62% of these employees travelled to work by car. After buying their e-bikes, only 6% commuted by car. 84% of participants usually use their e-bike for the commute.

Participants now travel 62% less car kilometres than before the purchase of their e-bikes. This accounts for 1.8 million car kilometres per year.
